The Lyon, Shorb and Company photographs are housed in eleven archival boxes and arranged according to their original placement in photograph display albums. There are 47 pages with 6 photographs per page. The 282 carte de visites have been removed from the album and stored in individual paper enclosures in archival boxes. The photographs depict the owners and employees of the Sligo Iron Works in work dress and in the case of 45 employees in "street clothes." The employees each hold a tool used in their specific work. Most of the photographs were shot at the Cargo Photographic Rooms in Pittsburgh.

Lyon, Shorb and Company traces its origins to a partnership between Robert T. Stewart and John Lyon. These men built an iron forge on the Juniata River in Centre County in 1813 and an iron fabrication mill in Pittsburgh in 1825. The Pittsburgh mill was called the Sligo Works and was located on the south side of the Monongahela River (on the site of the present Station Square).
